In the hippie era of the 60s and 70s, 'Puffing the Magic Dragon' was a common slang term for smoking marijuana. Cannabis was very popular during this time, as it was considered to be pleasureful and benign, and had self-exploration and spiritual uses.

O'Cannabis Anthem

Every year on April 20th thousands of people congregate at the Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver to smoke marijuana in public. The event has grown from about 50 people in 1997 to nearly 10,000 in recent years.

420 originated in a San Francisco high school in the early 70s. A group of kids, known as the 'Waldos', would meet at the Louis Pasture statue to blaze at approximately 4:20pm every day. They coined the term "420" because they could use it without the teachers knowing what they meant.

'Vansterdam' originates from combining the words Vancouver and Amsterdam. Vancouver is often known as the Amsterdam of the Americas because of it's liberal attitude towards marijuana.
