HAPPY EARTH DAY! To commemorate Earth Day, I chose to share my research of genetically engineered/modified (GM) foods as a tribute to the social and environmental issues that are affecting our precious planet. Also, since the public is confused about the controversy of GM foods and its adverse effects as it has been downplayed and fabricated by the Canadian government and the mass media, I felt that it is necessary to present empirical facts to the readers about this issue and let you critically evaluate it. This is a shortened version of my research of GM foods. The longer version was submitted to UBC; therefore, the facts presented here come from peer reviewed articles as it was a university paper. Drawing from Utilitarian principles, in this essay I will argue that drugs ought to be made legal because individuals have the right to self determination, and because legalization of drugs would be beneficial to society at large. In support of my arguments I will use Mills’ views on personal freedom as well as rule Utilitarianism to prove that not all things that can harm individuals should be made illegal. Finally, I will conclude that the social and economic benefits of legalization far outweigh any negative effects it may produce.

How? Kiva.org does it! You can donate money to alleviate a person from poverty in a developing country by helping them to kick-start their small family owned business.  For example, if you donate $25, the person that you lend the money to will pay you back within 8 months (every person varies and this is determined in advance). When you have received the full payment, you can either take the $25 back or re-lend it again, then the whole process repeats.
